Winnie Holzman & Stephen Schwartz, producers of Wicked, were motivated by the 1995 Gregory Maguire story "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West".
This broadway musical has been hailed for its expansive backstory of Oz, gifting The Wizard of Oz fans around the world a look into Glinda and Elphaba (aka the Wicked Witch of the West). WICKED, despite its main characters beginning as enemies, it's a deep journey about friendship and acceptance. With epic costume design and breathtaking special effects, Wicked transports the audience straight to the wonderful land of Oz!
The musical first premiered in 2003, making it 21 years old. Since its debut, Wicked has gone on to surpass $1 BILLION in box office sales on Broadway. Only The Lion King & The Phantom of the Opera have accomplished this incredible achievement. WICKED has also dominated theaters outside of Broadway, with records in Los Angeles, Chicago, St. Louis, and London.
